A PRESCRIPTION IS A PHYSICIAN'S WRITTEN LEGAL INSTRUCTION FOR PREPARATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF DRUGS OR MEDICAL DEVICE FOR AN INDIVIDUAL PATIENT.
Literally , the word prescription contains two words. The first word is PRE , which means before and the second word is SCRIPT which means writing or written and hence prescription is an order which must be written before the preparation of a drug.
A prescription may be hand written or it can be electronically transmitted to a pharmacy.
A prescription consists of following parts:
- SUPERSCRIPTION : A superscription is a type of heading which is denoted by a symbol Rx and this symbol is written above the inscription. It is a Latin word which means to take.
- INSCRIPTION :Inscription is the body of the prescription. The names of ingredients of a prescription are written in the inscription area. The dose of a medicine and it's dosage forms are written in this area of the prescription.
- SUBSCRIPTION : Subscription is a thing of past now. How ever in subscription area specific directions were used to written for preparing and compounding of medicines to the pharmacist. FOR EXAMPLE- "fill the 150 m.g of powder in 15 capsules and dispense". OR "make a suspension". In today's time doctor just writes the name of the syrup or capsule or tablet and it is readily available in the pharmacy.
- SIGNATURA : The other name of signatura is (TRANSCRIPTION). The signatura or transcription is the direction how to take the drug , when to take the drug , for how many days a patient has to take the drug. LATIN TERMS are used for indicating these directions.
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AND NON PRESCRIPTION DRUGS:
A prescription drug is a medicine which is prescribed by a doctor for a specific patient only and that drug must be bought from a legally authorized pharmacy only. A prescription drug is regulated through a Govt. agency of that country for approval , marketing , labeling of the drug.
A non prescription drug is also known as the OVER THE COUNTER (O.T.C) drug also. An OTC drug does not require doctor's prescription and it can be bought off-the-shelf in stores. An OTC drug can be marketed without the clearance of the Govt. agency.
MISUSE OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
Generally the prescription drugs are the strong medicines which are written by the well qualified physicians and doctors only. Every medicine has benefits as well as there are some risks also associated to it. Before prescribing a medication , doctor considers both benefit and risk to the patient , but when these medicines are self used because of their benefits without the consultation of any doctor , it is known as misuse of prescription drugs.
Manners in which the misuse of prescription drugs is done
- One of the manners in which the misuse of a prescription is done buy acquiring some body's else legitimate medical prescription which contains strong pain killers or narcotic drugs.
- Second way is that a person acquires the legitimate medical prescription by telling false complaints of pain or psychiatric problems to the doctor.

- Teen agers (both males and females ) , to get high or to feel euphoria , often are the misusers of prescription drugs.
- In India , alcohol abusers also misuse the prescription drugs as the alcohol is much more costlier in India than pills.
- In India , many low wage hard worker people also try to get the prescription drug in order to relieve from muscular pain and body aches and to have euphoria feelings.
